The overprinted 100-escudo note, with the original date of 27 March 1961. Aires de Ornelas (1866–1930), depicted on the note, was a Portuguese soldier, writer and statesman famed for his military exploits in Africa. In 1895 he was sent to Lourenço Marques where he distinguished himself in military operations. In 1896 was appointed head of staff to the governor general of Mozambique, Mouzinho Albuquerque. In 1905 he served for a short period as Governor of the District of Lourenço Marques under João de Azevedo Coutinho (see Figure 1). |
